![]() ![]() Inception of the theory about JUDEO-BERBERS Only the arguments themselves will be taken into consideration. For a study focused on objective knowledge, these psychological subjective factors can be ignored. No discussion will be done concerning the ideology of these authors. This aspect is of particular interest because in the context of extreme paucity of historical documents, a number of authors use inadequately onomastic materials to support their theories. The second hypothesis implies that numerous Jews who lived in Maghreb in modern times are descendants of these Berbers.ĢThe aim of this paper consists in shedding light only to one aspect of the Berber-Jewish connection: the surnames and the given names borne by Jews in Maghreb. The first one corresponds to the idea that before the Arabic invasion to North Africa in the seventh century, Judaism played a crucial role in the life of Berbers of the region, with a significant number of Berber tribes converted to that religion. One of the developed new concepts was that of JUDEO-BERBERS. Often, the way these links, factual or conjectural, were described was closely related to ideology of the author or, at least, was due to the general frame of analysis that in turn was deeply influenced by various ideological aspects 1. During the century, abundant literature described links of various kinds (cultural, linguistic, and even genetic) between the two groups of population of Maghreb.
